RI RS4.........oil question again
I am now at 1100km and want to change the oil at 1500km........was going to use Mobil1 0-40 (needed for eastern Canada) but read your comment on Motul 8100 E tech 0-40, can you confirm that in your opinion the Motul E tech 8100 is better than the Mobil1 0-40. Have you used the Motul E tech?, has anyone done test with Motul 8100 E tech?, was there any "tappet noise" during cold start with Motul E tech. I had a C55 before the RS4, used AmSoil for the first change and found "tappet noise" had increased considerably, now I am not saying the "tappet noise" is a problem but it is "worrying" when you are **** retentive about your engine/car, also AmSoil is better than the crap MB puts in by default. At the moment, the engine in my RS4 purrs like a baby big cat on cold start up, no "tappet noise".......its music to my ears, not to mention the exhaust........THIS BLOODY CAR IS AMAZING!!

Answer
The only info I have on M1 0w40 is my experience with my B6S4. In it, I found M1 to have more tappet noise. We don'thave any oil analysis data on M1 yet, although I think one owner was going to run a sample sometime soon.
Motul E-tech is smooth as silk in my engine, even on the coldest days. What I really like about Motul is it's resilience against fuel dilution. That becomes especially problematic in extreme cold weather. You'll need your oil to be able to flow quickly (E-tech does) and fight the fuel acids.
Will Motul be my final oil? I doubt it. But it's one that I have lots of data on at the moment and it performs well.

Amsoil 5W40 HTHS is a bit low at 3.2
Audi calls for a High Temperature High Sheer number of 3.5. This is an extreme test that is much like tappet oil sheer. It may be why you heard some excess tappet noise. Any 502.00 oil will have a minimum HTHS of 3.5.
Since you are going into extreme cold weather, you might try Redline 5W30, which is an incredibly good synthetic with a pour point of -45 C, and an HTHS of 3.8.

M1 gets mixed reviews in different engines
The biggest issue with Mobil 1 these days, is that they seem to be changing their formulations all over the place. There's no way of knowing whether it's the same oil that you used before. My recommendation is that someone run M1 0W40 for 1500 miles after and oil change and have Terry Dyson run an analysis and report, adding to the collective group knowledge.
My understanding that the problem with M1 is the wear add package that specifically targets the high sheer regions like the lifters and tappets. It's apparantly weak in this regard, accoring to some. All I can say is that I noticed more valve noise in my B6S4 with Mobil 1. But, that does not necessarily equate to additional wear. At the time I was not **** about doing oil analysis, like I am now.
Motul E-tech has some nice properties as does Redline. In extreme cold, Motul wins. It has a pour point of -60C/-76F.

Re: Amsoil 5W40 HTHS is a bit low at 3.2
Its cold, down to -12 briefly compared to -25 for 3 months, due to global warming, I do not think we will see -30 -40 again.....I will hunt down the Motul
