rpm dependent humming noise
Hi guys
I have a 2008 Audi RS4 Avant (B7) and experience humming noise which starts at approx 3000 rpm and continues up to 4500 rpm. Tone pitch (frequency) increases with rpm. It is a pretty high tone though.
Anybody know what the problem is?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Johnny

Yes, electric fuel pumps do hum. And, if the noise is from the rear (gas tank), it could be it. However, it should be pretty constant and can be heard even at idle.

Gathered some more info on the humming/howling tone in my RS4. It is most hearable when seated in the drivers seat, less in the passenger seat, and even less in the rear seats.
It is present also in idle (when engine rpm exceeds 2500-3000), but lot very loud though. The humming/howling becomes louder when the engine is stressed (through acceleration) compared to going at steady speed.
Again, the humming/howling starts at approx. 2500 rpm and continues until approx 5000 rpm. The frequency of the humming/howling increases with rpm.
Anybody out there knows what this could be?

Hi Johnny,
Is the RS new to you? If not, has this sound just recently started?
The noise you describe, is it more of a higher pitched whining noise (similar to a supercharger)? Does it come from the back of the motor?
If you answered "yes" to both of these questions, I'd be willing to wager it's the signature B7 RS4 sound which comes from the straight cut gears which run the A/C compressor and the power steering pump.

Hopefully what you hear sounds like this:

Hi nooB5
Thanks a lot. You have nailed it. I'm new to RS4 (only had the car for a couple of months). Also, "yes" to your two questions, it sounds like a supercharger/turbo and comes from the rear of the engine. And the sound from the video is what I hear.
You have convinced me that the whining noise is not a severe engine problem. And I'm truly happy about that :-) but do you see any means of removing/reducing the whining?
Thanks....
