Is the S5 Hurting RS4 Sales?
I've been trying to decide between a new S5 and trying to find a low mileage used RS4. The difference in price could only be $3-4000. As such, I've been following the auctions on eBay. I have yet to see an RS4 meet the reserve price. Also, the RS4s don't seem to be flying off the dealer's showrooms floors either. As exclusive as this car is, it seems there are more cars than buyers right now.
Is it the high price, or competition from other cars such as the S5 or M3 that seem to be hurting sales.
I really like the RS4, and after seeing two of them in one day on Friday I was hooked again... but I also have to admit the S5 looks soooo nice, and has a much nicer interior, that I'm really having a hard time figuring out how to proceed. I don't need four doors as we will probably keep our A4 no matter what we buy. That's why the S5 is so appealing... it has nearly the real-world grunt of the RS4 and much better looks IMO.

The choice is simple acutally...
Take some time to imagine each scenario of an S5 and and RS4 purchase, which car would you feel less regret or desire for the other car with. That is your answer.
I would take my RS4 over an S5 any day for many reasons. Sure the S5 is newer, but the RS4 is way more unique, not many of them trolling the streets. The engine is simply a masterpiece, as good as anything your ears will ever hear. Until they have an RS5, i'll keep my RS4 sleeping right next to me in bed every night
I would venture to guess that you will feel very little regret buying the RS4, but if you purchased the S5, you would always have that "what if" feeling...i know i would.

there are exactly 2 RS4s on ebay right now, but watching the auctions doesn't mean anything.
MANY times, cars a sold before the end of the auction, and they end the auction early....you can't assume it didn't meet the reserve price in that scenario.

I've driven an S5 and I'd take an RS4 everytime.
Nothing against the S5, it's a good car, but its no RS.
My short experience of the S5: A much more muted & tamed version of the RS4, with 2 doors and more of a focus on the interior styling / improvements.
I think the best thing about the S5 is how well they've done with the interior. IMO, they took the RS4 interior and improved upon it (ie. the Nav display is no longer so low and at a more appropriate viewing height). I also liked the 2 tone interior.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the S5 got more attention (2 doors vs 4), and that the insurance rates were higher (again 2 doors vs 4).
Forgive me for the lack of details in my review. It's been a few weeks since I've driven the S5.
