Default So I have a question regarding the RS4/R8 engine.

All of my experience has been with the 2.0T FSI engine, so I need some edjubacation on the 4.2 FSI.

Here are my questions:

1. Is my assumption correct that this is a "shared" engine between the aforementioned R models?

2. Unless I am missing my mark it seems as though these are the same engine, with a difference of 2MPH faster to 60, by removing the rev limiter on the R8?

3. If so, would chip tuning for the R8 be the same as for the RS4?

4. What is the bolt pattern and offset for the RS4?

5. Is it 5 X 112?

6. Offset?

TIA,
Jason

Default Re: So I have a question regarding the RS4/R8 engine.

The engine in the R8 is mostly the same as the RS4's ... but the intake manifold is different(mid mounted) and its a dry sump engine.
The 0-60 times are irrelevant , the RS4 and R8 are are a different weight and have different gearing. Im sure the R8's AWD system is more efficient aswell

I dont recall the bolt pattern but IIRC the offset is +29

Chip tuning is probably very different due to the different intake manifolds on both cars and different exhaust plumbing

I think you can add the flywheel/clutch may be different too.

Default i'd still rather have a torsen center diff

and i'd argue 0-60 is *always* irrelevant, period.

I think the R8 also has 2 throttle bodies.

Default so in reality, the RS4 doesn't really run the R8 engine

kind of like comparing humans and monkeys -- almost similar DNA, but no cookie.

Default Right on, I appreciate everyones feedback.

I have my eye on two RS4's on the west coast right now, and I just want to understand the tuning options available for long term planning and such.....you know. I think I am about to make the jump from A3 2.0T to one of these beasts....So you may have a new forum compadre soon.

Default Other than the manifold and oil pump... its the same engine.

The manifold is different so the engine will work in a mid engine car... but otherwise all the internals are identical

The only mods available at this time to improve performance are exhaust, brakes and suspension.
