We've had some hellacious downpours lately, so my guess is some rat, squirrel or other rodent made its way into the engine bay, perhaps to get out of the rain, and probably wanted to keep going. It probably scratched around until it came across the fabric, thinking it might be a way in, pulled the fabric out, and began trying to dig through the foam, not knowing that there was a firewall behind it, obviously because it did not RTFM, as we all know. :-)
Is your car kept in a garage? If yes get rat poison . Common issue at the airport here in Denver
