Default Transmission Fluid Change

Is it recommended to change the tranny fluid, I think the manual says it's lifetime but that's hard for me to believe. The reason I ask is when I'm idling and shifting through gears(while not moving) the shift sounds are very audible and there is a bit of notchiness as I go through the gears. Will a transmission fluid change improve the smoothness of shifts and reduce the noise that I am hearing? My car has 22k miles.

Default Re: Transmission Fluid Change...

It's possible that changing the fluid might help... but do not use anything but the OEM fluid and i would have a tech inspect and give his 2 cents first.

Default I changed mine at 20,000 miles and am about to again

Lifetime fluids are not "lifetime", not if your going to keep the car anyway.. Change it with a good quality fluid meting the Audi spec (lots of them out there). It did change how my transmission felt and sounded for the better. I did not use the OEM fluid BTW but an oil that meet the Audi weight and spec's.

Default Is there a DIY for Transmission fluid Change?

Thanks for the help. I searched for a DIY but could not find one, is this intuitive. Also is there any filter that needs to be changed out?

Default Fairly intuitive...

jack the car up level, remove the filler plug first, this way you are certain you can fill it once you drain it. remove the bottom plug and then drain the oil. (I had an old Porsche I could not refill because the filler plug was rusted stuck)

You will need to fill the transmission with a pump filler (see below).

Bentley says it holds 3.5 quarts of oil and you should fill it 2 mm below the bottom of the filler hole (+/- 1 mm). The bolt torques are 40 Nm.

Hope that helps!<ul><li><a href="http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/g2039.aspx">quart oil pump....</a></li></ul>
