$10,000 deposit
Tell me if this sounds right to you all. I am on two lists for the RS4. #8 at my closest dealer who did not require a deposit to get on the list, and #7 two hours away that required $1000. Both are RS6 certified dealers. I obviously don't know how realistic my odds are of getting an allocation. Some say only two to three cars per dealer, others say a car or two a month per dealer. My salesman who placed me on the list, just left with some sort of bad feelings, and is working for the Porsche dealership the same day. My file was given to the internet sales-manager who called to let me know, and that he verified my place on the list. One thing that he mentioned, and that I have never had to do for any other high end car I have purchased, was that at the time of ordering they were going to want a $10,000 deposit. Does this sound out of line for a limited production vehicle like the RS4? It really puts a bad taste in my mouth, and I wondered if this is normal.
Thanks for any insights.

That's ridiculous
What's the point of a deposit? So the dealer won't order a car and get stuck with it. What are the chances that a dealer would get "stuck" with an RS4? I would go elsewhere. Call Champion Audi/ Porsche in Pompano Beach FL. They shipped a Porsche to a friend of a friend in California when all the dealers there were jerking him around.

Seems excessive.
What's their risk? With all the built up anxiety surrounding lists (i.e. the demand will exceed the supply), it appears that they will be able to move these cars upon delivery. At $10k, you may have some time value of money concerns.

That's nuts!
I'm #3 at my dealer and pretty much guaranteed to get one in the first allocation. I have $0 out-of-pocket to date.
I am willing to ante up $2K WHEN I order, but I don't think that the dealership will require ANY money unless I order a custom color.
This will be my fourth car from this dealer, but frankly it shouldn't make any difference.
The dealer damn well knows that he'll have no problem selling his early allocation. He doesn't need $10K to guarantee that sale.
I'd go elsewhere if he holds that line. Or at the very list play the "M5" card.

which is most likely true?
I keep hearing conflicting things about how many each dealer will be allocated. one dealer says only 2 to 3. The more experienced reputable dealer things that that they will be getting a couple a month.

um, no.
first question is 'is the $10k a *refundable* deposit?' if it is refundable, then it doesn't really matter. if not, they can **** off. this is one of the reasons I didn't order a 911...local dealership wanted a $2500 NON-refundable deposit with a 6-month time frame from order date until delivery. a lot can happen in 6 months, and I wasn't willing to gamble $2500 on that.
having said that, my dealership didn't require a deposit to put me on the list for the RS4...but then again, they haven't physically ordered a car for me yet.
