4.2 engine issue.....comments/help welcome
Hi all....I'm new to forum and thought I'd relate this interesting tale...would like your comments if you have had any similar experiences or know of any Tech Bulletins on the issue.
Picked up new S4 4.2 early last month. Car had about 100 miles on the clock.
Number one: At around 200 miles low oil warning light comes on. Check dipstick and see that oil level barely shows on stick. Drive to local auto parts store and get oil. Very poor PDI in my book, dealer shrugs, says such oil consumption not "unusual". Bullpuckies says I, none of the cars I have ever owned have consumed that much oil in 160 miles, not even my old Volvo tank with 327K on the clock. Is this an Audi "quirk"..???
Number two: Notice funny "clunk" in engine upon cold start. Take to dealer and he hears same thing....cool (or damn....not sure which to think). Area tech rep says likely culprit is bad cam chain tensioner and says fix is to replace. Dealer pulls engine to fix. Not cool.....
Number three: After several weeks pick car up and drive home. Park car, open hood to take another look after all the work and find oil dripping on ground....damn, not cool.....
Take right back to dealer and after another two days am informed that engine is leaking from the front and that it has to be pulled again to fix....damn. Waiting for parts....cool....parts are good, maybe can fix car with parts....geezus....
Going on day 40 or so without car and making payments.
Any techies on this forum who may know of any Service Bulletins regarding cam chain tensioners and/or oil leak problems on the 4.2 S4?
Any help much appreciated....

all 5 valve per cyl engine have tensioner issues at one point
or another
new 4.2 however don't suppose to have these issues
I think your engine was losing oil before they work on it I see 4 of these engines with bad seals at the water pump drive shaft and some bad noises also
my advise is to get a complete new engine

Sounds like 2 things....
1 all cars make a clunk when they start up( Except MachtigAvants for some reason)
2 You either have a crack in the block or your front crank shaft oil seal is gone. Either can cuase heavy leakage. Sounds like they misdiagnosed the problem. Lemon the car and go to another dealer.

Could be a soft block too? I've seen new engines for crank shaft seals gone bad though...
I know there's a tool and a repair, but there's a tool and repair for the detents too, and some trannies still get replaced.
Hey, if he can get a new engine, why not? ;-)

Yes it could be a porus block problem as well...
Normally you can tell by looking in the oil or the coolant. Either the coolant collect some oil or the oil collects from coolant. If its a heavy leak its probably from a seal, however who knows with these engines anymore.

Yea, dripping oil is not good.
I did notice that my PTO was seeping oil, but that's not considered a "leak". ;-) Gotta love semantics.
Regardless, the new block fixed the problem. But dripping oil is not good. Let's hope it's a quick day-fix.
