Buying Used S4, Looking for Transmission Guidance
I have read all your posts on buying a used S4, and it seems that everyone thinks a Certified Pre-Owned is the way to go. Thanks for that input.
I am trying to decide on a Tip or a 6 speed, and have a few questions. I had an '04 3.0 A4 with a manual transmission (shown below) and was very dissapointed with how long the throws and clutch travel were. I had an RX7 Twin Turbo that spoiled me. The A4 tranny was not enjoyable. Is the S4 6 speed any different? Also, sorry for being ignorant, but do all Tips have the paddle shifters? And does the Tip give 100% control or does it takeover at times. I've driven an M3 w/ the SMG and loved it, but I don't think the S4 Tip is anything like that. I am leaning toward the 6 speed, but would love any input. Also, if there is anything else I need to watch out for, please let me know.
Thanks.

He ^ and I are both happy Tip owners...and we've both had MT cars before and know how to drive 'em!
I say that because the 6MT guys here are adamant that this car should only come in a manual transmission and that every Tip owner has one because they don't know how to drive a stick!...but there is soooooo much more to driving than pushing in a clutch. With a Tip you have just as much control over what gear you want to run in as you do with a 6MT. You have the flexibility of shifting with paddles, the stick or driving lazily in "D" or like a terror in "S"...(S mode makes the Tip possessed).
The Tip is about 100 lbs heavier than the 6MT and the gearing is slightly different...but EVERYTHING else about the car is the same. With the right cheap mods, you can run a Tip 0-60 in under 5 seconds. On the highway, the runs will be neck and neck...I've seen this from a 60 to 120 run between a Tip and a 6MT.
Up shifts and downshift are relatively quick...nothing like the DSG, but quick none the less...what else is there to say? It's a personal preference. Are you buying a daily driver? If you are and you have to ask...then buy the Tip. Just like the Sedan/Avant question...if you think you might like the Avant then get it!

3rd... Another happy Tip owner. I use the paddle shifters all the time, never use D mode.
I upshift and downshift as if I was driving a manual all the time. I also find on the track that because of the Tip, I can downshift to 2nd in tight corners and make up for the slight difference in gearing vs. the manual.

25 mpg trip mileage. :)...and agree with all below. Paddles are the cat's meow.
Annabelle likes the Tiptronic as well.
