if I say repainted an s4 say from red to pearl white.[colors are figurative]
would the value depreciate? even if the new color was a hot item? would it depreciate greatly?

obviously it would depend in part on the quality of the job.
if you're going to pay someone to completely strip the car down to the bare chassis and repaint it to near-OEM standards, then I think any excess depreciation would be tiny compared to the cost of actually doing a paint job that well.
if it's an Earl Schieb $89 paint job, well that's a different story.

2nd, going from red to a perl white would be very hard to make look right without some red showing
somewhere.
Also any color that is not OEM might make people think it's been wrecked hard.
