Default Do the auxilary radiators in our cars have a valve or thermostat controlling flow?

I have a small, intermittent coolant leak on the driver's side at the intersection of the belly pan and bumper cover. It only happens when I am idling for an extended period of time (when the engine doesn't have airflow for more than 5-10 minutes). Note that ambient temps here have been in the 50s to 60s lately. So I am wondering if my aux radiator is leaking and maybe it only sees flow at a certain temperature controlled by a valve or thermostat. Does anyone know?

I am a little worried about the aux radiator 'dumping' coolant in the middle of 95 in Philly when the ambient temperatures get higher.

By the way, the dealership 'pressure tested' the system and didn't find any leaks. But if there is a thermostat or valve, then it could have been closed during the test...yes? Of course, they should know that.

Thanks!

Default Yep, there's a valve to control flow to the aux. radiator.

It was the cause of the P2181 engine code (valve stuck open, low engine temperature) that was eventually TSB'd by Audi.

Clearly, the dealer SHOULD be aware of this.

Default Thanks, that makes sense! Need to get it fixed before amb. temps get higher. I will leave the ...

dealer written instructions. At least they are good at following my requests. Fortunately, still under warranty (CPO) and dealer is pretty responsive. Obviously they are not good troubleshooters though.

<center><img src="http://waywardtraveler.net/img/s4_2.png"></center><p>I am going through this now. Mine's been in twice already - first time they replaced the sensor. The second time they warranty-replaced the sensor.

The third time they said that for some reason my VIN didn't generate a hit for the TSB, but the tech checked TSBs for the Allroad and found it. They installed 'coolant hose with non-return valve' (per the invoice). All of these trips have happened since August '07 when I bought it. The third trip was on 4/3/08.

So, just my luck, I'm running a couple of errands and the @#%@! check engine light came back on. Checked the code (not with VAG, but a regular ODB scanner) and got the P2181 again.

This is starting to make me bitter.
