First impressions...
First the background, I got into Audis starting with an '07 A4 2.0T MT6. At the urging of a very persuasive Audi brand specialist I got my car chipped and fell in love with the added power, and that's when my addiction to speed/power started. Instead of quelling my new addiction, the same Audi brand specialist let me drive an RS4 which lead me further into the abyss of addiction. I toiled over the internet for months salivating over an RS4 or an S4.
My cravings finally came to a head and I was between an '07 RS4 or an '07 S4 avant. I drove the RS4 for about 6 hours one day and fell in love with it, though the initial "wow factor" wasn't quite there from the first time I drove it. I immediately got into an S4 for a comparison. Ultimately, I decided on the S4 avant (ibis white, black/black alcantara interior, CF trim, MT6) and haven't missed a beat.
Bottom line, I absolutely love my S4. I've had the pleasure of tracking the S4 (thanks to another audi nut) and actually got to drive the same track in an RS4. In my humble opinion there wasn't too much of a difference. Before all the RS4 guys/gals get upset, yes, the RS4 was slightly faster, but it also comes down to the driver and I've seen an S4 dust an RS4 and an A4 tailgate an RS4 on the track. And yes, I understand that driver ability plays a big role. However, that being said, I've gotten more random compliments on my car then I did while driving the RS4. Additionally, the sound of the V8 barrelling out of a wagon is AWESOME! People hear it and turn to look and are always surprised to see a humble (albeight badass) wagon staring them down. Furthermore, the cost of the additional horsepower (about $285 a horsey) didn't seem like a real deal now that I've driven the S4 for a while.
Thanks to a third audi nut (who sent me the link), I'm not alone. The people at Winding Road also agree (see link below).
I know that may have been a lot of nothing, but just had to throw in my two cents and tell everybody that I think we have a great car for the money.
Lastly, apparently the '07 S4 avant MT6 is more exclusive then the R8 or RS4 since only 74 were imported into the US in 2007!
And that is my humble opinion...<ul><li><a href="http://magazine.windingroad.com/windingroad/2008GH/?folio=36">Linkey link!</a></li></ul>

The Avant's are great looking cars. Glad you had the chance to wring out the whole A4 line of Audis!
I agree that there is something special about the V8 in such a small car. Especially a wagon.
Lately the B7 S4 board has been pretty busy with all the new cars or new car pieces.
(Yeah for STaSIS stuff!)
