found this on edmunds good for the S4
Although its previous principal competition may have moved to loftier plateaus, the 2008 Audi S4 remains a very attractive choice for those looking for extra oomph in their sport sedan. It's a serious performance car that can easily and comfortably perform the duties of an everyday or road trip companion. Still, those who want similar performance but with a less hard-core driving experience, should look at the BMW 335i, Infiniti G35 Sport and Lexus IS 350. The BMW and Lexus actually out-accelerate the S4, but neither offers the same type of visual panache or the street cred that goes along with the Audi's mission of intensifying an automotive arms race.

...and how 'bout this one from AutoWeek's Driver's Log:

Comments by AutoWeek editorial staffers on a car that's been in our fleet:
MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: I won't suggest that rational thought really enters the equation for buyers of Audi's RS4 supersedan, but in brief moments of clarity, they might wonder if they didn't go just a tad bonkers when they wrote the check. That's what I thought to myself a few times while driving this "plain old" S4.
This might be the perfect Audi sport experience, not counting the R8. In fact, this is arguably one of the most capable all-'rounders out there; it delivers high-end performance with very little sacrifice.
The price is far more reasonable compared with the RS, and you still get loads of power, rumbling sound, a great gearbox, great brakes, nice steering, all-wheel-drive traction and sweet chassis tuning. The S4 is beyond fun to toss around; it rewards good drivers, while making average drivers look good. For me, it's sized just right, too. Truthfully, I'd probably take the new S5 coupe, but if you want a four-door burner that does everything well--and you don't want to wait a year or so for the next-gen S4--this is your car. Or maybe the Avant would be even better.
EDITORIAL ASSISTANT JONATHAN WONG: I felt the same way about the S4. Sure, everyone would love to have the extra 80 hp in a RS4, but nobody actually needs it. Then there is the $18,000 base-price difference you have to take into consideration. Believe me, you'll be able to get into plenty of trouble with the S4's 340 hp and have plenty of money left over to pay fines and lawyer fees.
The biggest thing you take away after driving it is the impression that Audi knows exactly what it's doing with its smallest sedan. Everything is dialed in, from its smooth V8, precise six-speed, spot-on suspension tuning and steering response. The engine pulls madly up to the 7000-rpm redline, and the chassis is more than capable of handling all the power. Even with winter tires, our test car whips through corners without breaking a sweat.
The carbon-fiber content is also appealing. The interior trim and trunk-mounted lip spoiler look cool, but I wonder about the carbon-fiber front lip spoiler. One close meeting with a parking block, and it's done.

>original article here<
