Help needed...Engine Designation on a 2004 S4
Get a call tonight from a local Audi owner (found my name off our club website) telling me a bit of a horror story. Which I won't go into...blown engine and non-audi mechanic doing an engine swap.
First question I have is, what is the proper designation for the engine in that model and car. There are plenty of 4.2 engines out there but I'm sure the S4 is probably something different that other 4.2 motors. I'd like to drop by the mechanic tomorrow and make sure he's got the right engine for the car. Some reason the owner is a bit concerned the mechanic bought the wrong engine.
So where on the block should I find the engine stamp? And what designation should I find? I'm more familiar with I-5's, 1.8's and 2.7 engines and don't have much experience with the 4.2's.
Also, any specific issue I should advise him on a motor swap on this engine?

The engine designation is "BHF" and this can be found along with the engine serial number imprinted on top of the block underneath the intake manifold. It should be something like BHFxxxx.
I know this because my car is currently at the dealer with a cracked block and making valve train noise. It has been determined that my engine number is 1066 which puts it in the 1200 bad block range as my build is a early build of 6/03.
I am currently in hell with AOA and Audi Pure Protection since the car is on extended warranty.

The S4 4.2 V8 for 2004 for the US market is an all new engine with 4 chains driving the the camshafts all located at the rear of the engine. No more timing belts like all the prior 4.2 V8s. What engine code did the mechanic purchase?
