How do I know if my car is running rich?
Its a 2004 Cab with intake and fullback. I have to add oil about every 1k to 1.5k. I noticed a heavy exhaust smell yesterday. My S4 was cold sitting just outside the garage, started it up, backed it in - slight upward grade so I have to give it some gas. Shut it down and noticed the smell. What do you guys think?

One of the repercussions of following the manuals's recommendationon on
(EASY) break in during the first 100/1000 miles. Many with this engine have and continue to experience oil BURNING. It is ususally the result of incomplete piston ring seating. Audi will tell you that consumption of 1 qt/1000 miles is "within acceptable limits". Acceptable to who! Audi, of course. There are many of us, inclulding myself, who have used little or no oil in over 20K miles. WHY are some engines burning and others not.The most likely answer is incomplete piston ring seating as direct result of break in technique. There could also be other reasons as well. FYI, they are having the same problem with the C6 Corvette. GM has finally condescended to admit that there is a problem with the lower piston rings. Perhaps the Audi problem is not really with the break in technique and is really defective ring problem. Don't hold your breath for Audi to admit to that!
