bah, I've filled up passed the capacity listed in the owners manual.
for my A4. However, Audi has said that running the fuel tank down low makes the fuel pump work harder. A lot of 2003 A4s have had fuel pumps fail. Its better to not have the warning light go off at all to prolong the life of the fuel pump.
With that said, I've had my '02 A4 for 3 years now and I always fill up after driving 20 miles after the fuel till empty reads 0. My fuel pump hasn't failed yet.
I've managed to fill up three times more than 17.4 gallons (that's what the spec says for my car).

I wouldn't worry about the fuel pump...
I put 128,000 miles on my 2000 S4 in 5 years and consistently ran it until the light came on before I filled up. That's a LOT of fill ups considering that I got 300 to 320 miles per tank. I'm not saying there's no issue, I'm just saying my experience showed no issues in cycling a hell of a lot of gas through this car, to nearly empty each time.
For the record, I never got more than about 15.5 or 15.7 gallons into my 2000 S4, even when I ran it 20+ miles past the "0" mark according to the trip computer.
