Default I'm sure this subject has been addressed but

there is nothing specific to the 2005 s4 in the archives. Now I'm no Dale Earhardt Jr. but unless I am really deliberate in shifting from 1st to 2nd I am grinding the gear slightly. I have to really let off the gas and pull rather firmly and precisely or about every 40-50 shifts I get a little grinding. Is there a service bulletin on this. I know I'm shifting well enough that this is not normal. Can the dealer do anything? reset a fault or something? Also, I've done this altogether maybe 10-15 times. How bad is thisfor the synchros? I mean I know it's not good but has there been any damage? PLEASE LORD HELP MEEEEEEE!!!!

Is your foot fully pressing down on the clutch pedal, disengaging it prior to shifting?

For the most part it is but the clutch is really not forgiving. You have to pay attention shifting or you get the grind in the 1-2 shift if you're even a little bit sloppy. Does the grind, if not done excessively damage the tranny?

Default Give it a little time for the trans to break in, but in the mean time try this

First you can try a slight hesitation in neutral between first and second, but that's not really the answer. Secondly try this. It worked for me until I got a few miles on the car and everything loosened up a bit. As you are shifying from first to second. Instead of going straight bacK with the shift lever, apply firm pressure toward the left side of the shifter gate . That is, pull the shifter back and toward the left instead of just straight back. Hope that helps. It worked for me. After a short time,it was no longer necessary to do this. If you continue to have this problem, you will need to have audi look at the car.

You could have a bad 1/2 synchro? If so, Audi can fix it!

What does the dealer have to do to remedy this if need be. And how bad is this for the gear. I know it's not good but the car only has 550mi. so at this point do you think there is any damage that if the problem goes away(eg: tranny loosens up a little) it won't have any effect on the performance/durability of the gears?

Default I posted on this last week ....

I was experiencing an intermittent, "mushy" 1-2 shift - I took Doc's advice and whether it was hesitating during the shift - resting in neutral for a sec - then shifting to 2nd, or putting a bit of pressure on the left side of the shift gate, the problem has clearly lessened or disappeared. I didn't have "grinding" though - I would have your Audi dealer test drive it, preferably with you in the car, and have them assess the need to replace the 1-2 synchro.

If it goes away, everything is fine. If not, trans needs an new synchro

Default Let it break in.

I had a few rough edges on my tranny for a few thousand miles. No problems now.
