If you want reliable
buy a honda
I have owned Audi's before (and will soon again) and they do not have great reliability, to be sure. Better than they were five or eight years ago, admittedly. It is the price you pay for the performance and comforts of an Audi. For some, the price is too high. one of my partners just got an infiniti M35x. Wow, what a car. Not screaming performance, but wow.
There were some major issues with the B6S4 when it first came out.
My BMW has been much more reliable but, as a roadster, it is a much simpler car. The 5 series BMW is not as reliable.
don't even think of owning an Audi past warranty IMHO

If you are looking for problem free, don't buy ANY Audi or BMW for that matter.
You can also include Mercedes. If you are looking for a car with few problems, you will be happier with an Infinity, Lexus or Acura. They have some nice cars with AWD. Chance are that they will be more reliable and have less defects than any of the German cars. That being said. All of us STILL bought Audis. We have decided to put up with some reliability issues to drive what we believe is a superior car. Not more reliable or trouble free, just a better car when everything is actually working. Which is most of the time. (There are exceptions)

If this helps any
Consumer Reports now recommends the A4 due to average or better than average quality and reliability. Also, Consumer Reports now rates the quality and reliability of Audi as a whole nearly as good as the best Japanese cars (Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura and Subaru) and much better than BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Gaguar-err-Jaguar and Junk Rover-err-Land Rover. JD Power and Associates and Strategic Vision strongly beg to differ. According to the website for CR, CR surveys 800,000+ vehicle owners a year. JD P&A and SV combined survey significatly fewer than 800,000 vehicle owners a year (I don't know the exact numbers). That makes CR a much more reliable automotive source than JD P&A and SV. I know I used to bash CR to no end. How embarrasing is that?! But truth be told, CR is on the ball much more often than they are wrong while JD P&A and SV are on the ball just as often as they are wrong. I honestly believe that CR is right on the ball here. At the same time, I honestly believe that JD P&A and SV are wrong here. My $0.02.
