Looks pretty clearly to be a 2 piece floating rotor, with an aluminum hat. I could certainly verify that if necessary anytime.

...the R32 rotors feature 2-piece, isolated hat and disc construction and directional internal vanes for maximum temperature stability and reduced fade. The calipers are two-piston, floating type calipers, painted R32 blue...

and btw this exactl caliper is also used on the MB C43 and BMW 7series also with similar types of 2 piece rotors.

Default DROOLLL.. i don't know if i feel like dropping a G though. i thought quality rotors cost like 500?

nice though. cuts down weight.. anything to lower that front end!

Default Now THAT is how you allow for heat expansion.

Those rotors do not float laterally, correct? The ECS design looks like it would allow only lateral movement and not allow radial expansion. And yes, those are floating calipers

This whole thread got started, however, by Perter04S4 stating his belief that laterally floating rotors (ECS) are not compatible with our laterally floating calipers. These R32 rotors appear to not float laterally like the ECS rotors appear to, so the question remains unanswered.

Default I have the ECS rotors for my A4. Construction is the same as the B6S4.

They do not allow significant lateral expansion/motion.

The holes in either the rotor or the hat are slotted/slightly oversized in the radial direction, which allow for the rotor ring to expand as it's heated. The bolts which attach the rotor to the hat are installed tightly, but not so tight so as to restrict radial expansion. (The bolts still have to be able to slide within the holes to allow radial expansion) ECS uses the conical spring washers to so they don't have to install the bolts slightly loose; the spring washers hold the rotor to the hat with some force, also avoids having the rotors clank or be loose under various temperature conditions.

That being said, there is the chance for some very minor lateral motion of the rotor w.r.t the hat. This so far hasn't proven to be an issue with the rotors on floating caliper applications. ECS sells these same rotors in a variety of fitments of Audi/VW vehicles.

Your comment about the thermal props of aluminum vs steel are valid, but the aluminum hat sees much less heat than the rotor ring due to the fact that the ring is where the friction occurs. Typically, the biggest reason that single piece rotors crack or warp is because the hot outer portion of the rotor tries to expand more than the cooler inner hub will.

All in all, I've been very happy with the performance of the rotors as they pertain to my experiences with the B5A4. One of the main problems with the solid OEM brake rotors on the A4 was heat dissipation and warping when pushed hard at the track. I've had no problems with the ECS rotor upgrade.

Hope that answers some questions about how the ECS rotors are put together.
