Need advice from a B5 guy about the B6 avant
As much as I love my B5 sedan, with a new addition to our family, my back seats are now cramped with a child seat and the wife. For you people in the same situation, how much more family friendly is the B6 avant? I was looking originally at the E500, but I don't think I'll be ready for that until I'm 50.

space...
Although I dont have kids, I dont think there is much room in the rear for kids. I drive my friend's kid ard sometimes and the rear is tight. Abit of a squueze for an adult to be back there with a kid.
I actually looked at a E500 Touring before I bought the S4 avant. I actually prefer the E but I couldnt justify the addtional cost to the E. I do love the way the interior of the E, I think its one of the best interiors of the Germans out now. The 5 is a failure, the B6S4 is just too plain in comparison but functional.
Go test drive one!

Tight but workable,
Drove 450mi one way from Charlotte NC to Mercersburg PA and back with a friend 6'3" and two of his sons 17 5'9" and 13 5'3" they took turns in back. My drivers seat is usually all the way back but I am comfortable if I move the seat up as much as 3". I am 6'4" and 235lbs, the friend sat in back behind his oldest for over two hours and watched a movie on his laptop, wasn't cramped or uncomfortable at all, didn't really mind. the passenger seat was moved forward about 3" to allow a litlle more room.
put child seat behind driver allow wife to sit behind passenger with seat moved up and she should be as comfortable as if sitting in front.
love my Avant, plenty of room for four persons gear as well on a 3 day weekend.

regarding transmission issues and other things...
is this something that is with the manual only? or are tips equally affected? most likely if I opt for the B6 avant it's going to be a tip for the wifey. and no, she doesn't want to and will not learn to drive a manual.

The trans issues were primarily on the early build cars
The 'no reverse' problem affected a specific VIN range. Check out the TSB for it if you want to know the details.
The engine problem with a valve was for the first 1200 cars.
There's been a few cases of problems here and there with seals, but nothing as bad as the original valve and no-reverse issues.
