Default Once again engine whine questions with examples

I did the TSB regarding the idler and tensioner pulleys on my 04 S4 and I still have that unmistakable engine whine. I browsed through some You Tube clips and I can hear some of the engines clearly whine like mine and others seem to be very quiet. Here are the links to the You Tube clips, can you guys post your experience with the whine you hear on the clips listed below? Are your cars sounding like this as well?
It's very noticeable inside the car with the windows up which is strange since these cars are loaded with insulation.
I have been contemplating the fact that's it the PTO but I'm having a hard time believing it since the whine is so loud. Would Audi engineers really design the car as such????

Any help is greatly appreciated and feel free to post clips of your engine sound; I would do the same except I do not have a video camera.

Thanks

The timing chain is right against the firewall, moved from the redesign it took to stuff this engine in such as small car. Mine is noisier when it's cold, but I think most of us actually like the sound, goes with the sporting car image. If you wanted quiet, you should have bought a Lexus, or the A8. As far as engineering, look how long it took for BMW to catch up? 4 years for them to put in a V8.

Default Agree

The TSB corrects a different, higher pitched sound from the tensioner and/or pulley. The normal whine is from the PTO.

Default Not sure I agree with the BMW statement...

I'm an Audi guy all the way but they were using an I6 that put out almost as much horsepower as our V8, and the car they put it in is faster as well.

BMW will always outperform Audi because that is practically their mission statement, its the total package that you get with Audi's that make them worthwhile and a better overall car in my opinion.

Default Just got an 04 S4 and was wondering the same thing. Mine makes that exact whine when it is colder.

I like the sound. Has a nice muscle rumble in the back and a supercharger hummm/whine in the front.
PS.I know the car doesn't have a supercharger...

Default Here is how you can tell if it is caused by the pulleys and tensioner

First, you will hear it only when the weather is cold(under 50 degrees F). It usually goes away when the engine warms up but not always. The whine will be gone above 3000 rpms. BTW, I had to have the idler and pulleys replaced twice to eliminate the whine. Aparently some of the parts used to repair the problem were also defective.
