Recommended oil change interval

I did it right after every track event with my old B5 S4 - also Mobil 1.
I am not sure I ever did 3K miles between events with that car, so the changes were quite frequent

There is a good article in the new C&D about oil sludge
I got a letter from AoA saying they were extending the warranty on my old 1.8T for oil sludge claims and VW recently lowered the drain interval to 5K miles for the 1.8T. Your answer depends on your driving style and whether you are using your car under what they label as extreme conditions. For me, I get my car up over 212 degrees every day, then again it doesn't run too hot either (no track). Getting the engine hot enough burns off the water in the oil that can cause oil to form that white foam that eventually turns into sludge blocking oil lines and passages. Short trips doesn't allow your engine to heat enough to accomplish this. You need to change more often if you live in cold/hot climates, drive down dusty roads or only commute a few miles. Good reading is you owner's manual, follow their guidelines and your engine will be safe. Now if your car is turbocharged, then I am a firm believer in synthetic every 5K, turbos are incredibly hard on oil. If you track your car or hit the 1/4 mile strip every weekend then I would also change every 5K, otherwise stick with the scheduled maintenance but do make sure you get an oil filter at every drain interval. I think Audi only changes it every other time, at least on the 2.7T engines. So for a few bucks get the filter if it isn't included.
