Replace 03 allroad tip with 04 S4 6 spd? (long)
Considering trading 03 allroad for 04 S4 for the improved handling and responsiveness (tip lag). With no more kids at home (only dogs) think I can live with the smaller size of the S4 Avant. I do have some questions for the S4 experts:
1. Is the fuel consumption really worse with the 6 spd (15/21) than the 6 spd tip (18/24) as the EPA estimates indicate? What is your real world experience? Does it justify that Gas Guzzler tax penalty? allroad wasn't great either but I am no fan of the tip (at least with turbos).
2. With lower ground clearance, how is the S4 in snow. Living in Vermont mountains I see a lot of it. However, almost never need allroad above level 2. My previous A6 2.7T sedan did fine with good snow tires. Has the ground clearance created a problem for anyone in snow?
3. How has your reliability experience with the S4 been versus other Audi's that you have owned? It is obviously a complicated machine but has no turbos or adjustable suspension. Only major problem that I have had with Audis has been with the Tiptronic in previous a previous A6 Avant. The allroad has been solid.
Many thanks for your help, and I hope all of you are enjoying your S4's.

Some answers.
1)I really believe the difference in fuel economy between the tip & 6 sp is determined by how you drive it. Expect 14+ mpg in city and 20 mpg highway after 5k break in. If you expect more you will be dissapointed. This car begs you to acellerate it! 2) This car will go great in snow ONLY with dedicated snow tires especially in VT. 3)Expect reliability to be on a par with other Audi's. Some initial problems with the 6 speeds and engines have been resolved.

Agree with Dr. GP.
1) I get about 22mpg when road-tripping it (mostly highway) in my tip. About 14-17 when driving around town.
2) I frequently drove up in VT last winter and the car is truly awesome in the snow (had 18" wintersport 240's). Never had a problem with even the deepest snow.
3) Picked up my car sept 03, and the car has been perfect. Obviously, YMMV. :-)
