I can tell you that.. the difference between RS4 and S4 is RS4 got a R in front of S4...

The RS4 existed on the previous platform (B5), but not on the current B6 platform. The B5 RS4 made 380hp (I think) from its twin turbo V-6 vs. the B5 S4's 250hp, and had better braking and handling capabilities to go with it. And it was available only as a wagon.

The B5 S4 and RS4 both came with 2.7L bi-turbo V6 engines. The S4 came with 250hp stock (265 in Europe) and the RS4 came with 380hp stock. For the RS4, the entire S4 engine was reworked and upgraded with more robust components. Take a look at the <a href="http://www.hoppenmotorsport.com/420hp.htm">MTM Stage 4 kit</a> for the S4, which includes lots (but not all) of the hardware upgrades included with the RS4.
