Re: Strange vibration and engine noice
I dont get the vibration, but when i first start my car and begin driving, i hear this loud whistling noise from my engine, like there are twin turbochargers in there or something...anyone else like that?

Yes, I have this as well. To me it sounds like...
the noise a power steering pump makes in some cars when you turn the wheel all the way and it's straining (not a squealing type noise, but almost a belt rubbing or friction type of noise). Definitely much louder in the morning, but it doesn't seem to be directly temperature related because it remains for quite a while after the engine is completely warmed up. However, after some time the noise level will eventually get much lower and is hardly noticable. For me this problem cropped up a few weeks into ownership, but it hasn't gone away.

I don't think so then, My Avant went into production 10/02/03
delivered 11/04/03 haven't had any of the issues at all, 99% flawless. Drag strip twice, went easy on clutch/trans, Drivers track event at VIR and 160mph+ on local interstate, as well as a BMW weekend drive in the mountains of NC/SC. 10276mi and still getting better every day.

Check the level in your power steering fluid. I got something like that and it turned out to be the
power steering fluid level. I bought a bottle at the dealership just so I could top off when necessary. My tech said that it was a well known problem that somehow the steering fluid levels would drop on cars like ours with no puddles or obvious leaks in the system.
Mine turned out to not even register on the dip stick when I checked. Check it like you would your oil - engine off and screw the cap down all the way after wiping off the stick and then check to see the level. Add until it is within the range shown on the dipstick.

Thanks for the tip! I just checked and that's what it is. Now my concern...
is that I've run a few weeks like this. I wonder if it might have done any significant damage in terms of longevity of the pump by running it that low for weeks. Doh!
