Tire/wheel weight & fuel economy

Tire/wheel weight & fuel economy
Lots of questions recently about aftermarket wheel/tire weights vs. stock. I just replaced my stock 18" Avus / Conti setup with the 19" RS4 DTM / Falken setup from Achtuning. Exactly 50 lbs. for the stock setup & 52 lbs for the RS4 DTM.
As for fuel economy, I just completed a fairly long road trip. 900 miles each way. Outbound (3600-4500 total odo miles) @ 21.6 mpg. Return (4700-5600 total odo) @22.9 mpg. This was in TX / NM and was mostly at ~ 75 mph +/- 10mph. Some short blasts up to ~120 - 130, but mostly pretty steady (lots of cruise control). This was actual odometer mileage divided by actual fuel purchased & tank was topped up each time, so should be pretty precise over that distance. Interestingly, the trip computer was consistently underestimating mileage by about 1 mpg.

Re: Tire/wheel weight & fuel economy
I consider it reasonable, particularly considering that 75mph ~ 3000rpm. The point is that one must be really "tender footed" to get reasonable gas mileage. This car is easily capable of 11-12mpg if you apply throttle aggtressively, particularly around town.

You see what gets me is everyone complains about gas mileage, ok the gas mileage is not great....but what V8 with 300 + HP and this amount of torque does have good MPG?.........I had a 02 M540, the MPG was better, but not by much, but then it is a much slower car. Sometimes it is really hard to find people who are just enjoying the car and enjoying life..........as they say bad news travels fast.

All about 20%-30% better gas mileage than the S4.
Even Audi's own A8L gets 17/24. Can't say I'd call any of them "good MPG", but better than the S4. Even the automatic S4 gets better MPG.
It even holds the EPA title for "Least Efficient Small Station Wagon".<ul><li><a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml">EPA best/worst</a></li></ul>

The point is you dont buy a V8 sports sedan for good MPG, if you do, you are dreaming......the EPA have listed the car as one of the worst for MPG....OK and your point is?.....this SPORTS SEDAN is one of the most exciting cars I have ever owned and I think most on this forum would agree, I would like to see all the S4 owners just relax and enjoy the car, if you spend all your time worrying about gas mileage, theres no hope that you will enjoy the car as you should.
