Xenon (HID) / DRL Headlight problems?
My MY 2006 S4 Avant has had the "dipping" headlight problem in both lights (I replaced one) and this weekend, the driver side DRL went out. I looked at the socket and it's charred-looking -- I believe that the bulb filament is intact and the problem is in the socket. After Google searches and AudiWorld searches, it seems like there are MANY people who have the B7s and have had headlight woes similar to mine. When I contacted Audi about the Xenon problem in the fall, they suggested that I contact the BBB as the "solution" to this problem...
If you've had a problem with your car's headlights, please send me (danw@nekotech.com) an email, with the subject line: "MY 2006 Headlight Problems" and a brief description / timeline of your difficulties.
Ultimately, I'd like to send the aggregate date to the BBB and see if there is any possibility of strong-arming Audi to replace defective headlamp units.

I've had both of mine replaced...
Your car is still under warranty, is it not? I ask because I had this happen on my drivers side and at first they "couldn't duplicate the problem".. then I gave my car to a buddy of mine in the service department and got a loaner for the weekend and told him to drive it till he saw it! There are a couple issues....
1. Get them to replace BOTH bulbs if this is happening.
2. Have them check the leveling motors.
3. Have them replace the headlight switch... They found there was more of a problem with the switch than the bulbs... but perhaps the issue with the bulbs was caused by the switch.
For the record, I still to this day have zero condensation issues with either headlamp and of the few problems I've had electrically with the car... the headlight switch has gone bad 2 times (and I feel there's an issue again)... and I don't know if it matters at all wear wise... but my switch has stayed on AUTO for the entire time I've had the car except for the few times I put the fogs on...

Re: Xenon (HID) / DRL Headlight problems?
Just bought my S4 from a private seller and he noted some similar instances in the past with one of the headlights. I have not seen it happen yet but mentioned it when I took it into my dealer for an initial checkup after purchase. I read up on it and sounds like the ballast can go bad on the B7s fairly frequently. I just told them about the issue and asked that they replace the driver side ballast. They ordered the part and are waiting on me to bring it back in. Getting it done free of charge (still under original warranty).

before you try to 'strong-arm' audi, stop by your local audi dealer and talk to the shop foreman. If this is an issue with the headlamp or socket and not with the bulb and your car is still under warranty (4/50 or cpo) the headlamp and new bulb should be covered.
If the issue lies with the bulb then you are on your own. They really have no reason to lie to you considering they don't make money by not fixing cars.
