I have about 250 miles on mine.. I'm averaging 15.6mpg, which is up from 15mpg at about 150 miles. I'm also breaking in the engine, which is certainly having an affect.
But yes, my 335i was getting significantly better gas mileage, even when it was new. I was averaging 22-23mpg in mixed driving, I feel like I'll be doing good to average 20mpg in the S4, but it's also AWD, and that alone is going to have some impact on gas mileage. Guessing highway trips in comfort mode are the only way to get 27mpg out of her.

I was out ****ing around in the snow, I was driving very hard for about 30 minutes, I averaged 19 liters per 100 km or 12.5 mpg, not bad, I expected worse as I was really pushing it hard. I use about $650 a month in gas. My GTI doesn't fair much better when she is pushed hard either. My TT on the other hand gets great mileage.

I recently did a test and left the sport diff. in auto mode for one week. Wanted to see if it would improve gas mileage. I drove very conservative, mostly in town driving with a few highway sprints and did not see a marked improvement. In actuality I got slightly worse gas mileage. Strange, right?
Now, the first thing I do after firing car up is hit the dynamic mode setting (then of course I put my seat belt on). I highly enjoy the increased throttle response the dynamic mode offers. At times when I feel the car is getting too slow (you know that feeling after getting used to something) I put the car in auto for a day to make myself suffer. Next day I pop my baby back into dynamic mode and the car feels like a beast again. Kind of same feeling I used to get when having my turbo cars chipped. In the end I find that the B8 S4 sucks on gas, literally! On a side note my prior '08 135i average at least 4-5 more miles per gallon.

I track every fuel-up on an iPhone app and then import it into Fuelly.com. Good utility to keep track of all your cars and how it is doing on MPGs.
My annual review

My Vehicle Profile

All other B8 S4's that are being tracked by Fuelly. They all average at around 19.

Now compare it to the 335
http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/335i
It is clear that the 335 have better MPG as they all average over 20.
I average 19.6 mpg in mixed HWY/City according to Fuelly which is more accurate, but my trip computer tells me 21mpg.

I thought the exact same thing until I sat down and looked at the numbers. I have about 6500 miles on my car and the computer says I'm averaging 16.7 MPG. In all actuality, I am averaging 17.2 to the best of my calculations. This is totally understandable to me because my commute is short, in the morning and afternoon, and my oil temperature rarely gets warm during the week. When I'm not on my daily commute, I like to drive the car spiritedly once its been properly warmed up.
For someone whose daily commute is 100% city, I am very happy. I was getting 15.9 in my B7 S4 and it was nowhere near as fun to drive or as fast I will say that I am very happy with the freeway MPG though. The car can get 24MPG cruising at 80 which is better than I had hoped for.

I easily get 26MPG on my 90-mile freeway commute (per OBC). I'm generally in "auto" mode (ADS lite), but manually shifting so that I don't find myself going uphill at 60 MPH in 7th - I'm not driving in a 'sporting' fashion though. If I really try to drive like a tool in a Prius, I can hit 28 for the trip. 14k miles on the car.
I make shorter trips around town on weekends, but still get well into the 20's overall for every tank. Y'all must just have heavy feet.

I have about 1200 miles on my new S4. According to the on board computer I'm averaging just over 15 MPG which is considerably lower than advertised. I don't drive it particularly hard - I had a 335i and averaged 19 MPG and it has 6 gears vs. 7 in the S4 which should help. Anyone else experiencing lower than expected gas mileage? Does this car need a longer break-in period?

20.2mpg in LA 5:30am commute traffic mostly at 73~85 mph for 13 miles on I-5 (dynamic mode, passing aggressively 3 or 4 times) i have 15000 miles on it.

Long trips on freeway yield 27 with average speed over 70mph. About 20 around town. Short shift a lot since you do not need 6 speeds given all the torque
