When I switch gears from reverse to 1st the camera stays up for a few seconds until the auto door locks come on...is this normal?

Yes. This is intentional for safety purposes.

thanks. was hoping to hear that.....kinda weird seeing behind me when i drive forward....but as long as it is normal

Yup, I have the same experience with my Q5 loaner back up camera.

Camera turns off when you hit a certain forward speed. I think this is so it doesn't keep shutting on and off as you are inching back and forth while parking. It just stays on until you start moving forward. This shutoff speed can be adjusted with VCDS

Camera will stay on until your speed increases past 5 mph. Believe this way designed in part to be helpful in parallel parking situations

That makes sense.

I kind of like the fact that I can see it for a little while moving forward. As long as the music comes back louder after shifting into 1st which it does.
