I find ripping CD's in Apple Lossless format and playing them through the Ipod interface sounds reasonably good - at least compared to using the SDHC card with mp3 format.

Honestly, I think it all depends on how much of an audiophile you are. The only B&O i've had a chance to listen to is the one on a Q7 TDI they had in stock at the dealership. Sounded amazing to me, but i'm also not an audiophile.

I think the B&O is a terrific system and sounds great. However, it is very unforgiving of poor source material. The deficiencies in lower-bitrate MP3s and satellite radio are revealed by the B&O system rather than disguised.
However, when I listened to the non-B&O system in my loaner A4 while my A5 was in for service, I noticed just how much worse it sounded than the B&O system I'm used to.

BIG diff between the Q7 w/B&O vs the S4.

I generally agree, but HOW crappy mp3 sounds will depend on the bitrate. I hear little or no difference on my car's system between a 256 kbps mp3 and a WAV (uncompressed) version of the same song--but on a more discriminating system with less background noise going on than you get in a car, the differences are audible. Drop the bitrate below 256 and I think many people would hear the compression effects easily...

sat radio is compressed like your mp3's...
Like others have said even with the best equipment available, if you have a crap source you aren't going to get very good sound in the end.

My recipe for great sound on this system:
1) Put in a well mixed origional cd (preferably TOOL)
2) set the sound focus to "driver" to get proper bass coming at you
3) leave everything else pretty much in the middle, except for a little more surround.
