The tie for worst cupholders ever in my car history is between a 1999 Honda Civic in which the holders were about 2cm. deep so that any drink container one placed in there would tip over at the first corner, and a 1997 Subaru Outback in which the holders sprung forth from the center dash so that any container would obstruct all of the main climate and stereo controls, plus would splash beverage across the dashboard when one hit a bump in the road.

Lol, of course not.
I'm not keen (understatement!) on any aspect of current BMW interior design, and the cupholders are just one item on a long list. For me, interior design is more important than exterior style and once I sat in the S4, my choice was made.

Absolutely, it's one of the items I'd use often. The BMW E9x slide outs was a major negative for me. However, if the S4's holders were only in the armrest I wouldn't be too happy either. Same design as my previous '98 Prelude. That was a manual so sometimes with coffee sitting there I'd get some drink rub off on the right sleeve or arm. The bottle holders in the doors are great to have and used often.
Agree with another post on the '96-'00 Civic holders - utterly useless design making drinks tip over easily.
