DSG and a sudden increase in RPM
I have a 2011 S4 with DSG and about 6K miles on it. A couple of times I noticed a strange behavior from the transmission in Auto mode. I was cruising at around 65mph controlling the speed with the gas pedal (cruise control is off). Then, suddenly, the RPMs would jump from about 2K to 5-6K. At first, I thought I am being passed by a motorcycle because nothing in the car's behavior changed, and it was the increased engine noise that made me think of a motorcycle nearby. I did not feel any gear shift or anything like that. I was maintaining a steady speed.
Hitting on the right gear shift flap helped to solve the problem. It happened twice in two days and for the past week is was functioning as usual.
I'm curious if I should be concerned about the clutch slipping or a glitch in the TCU. I'm afraid that if I take it in to the dealer they will not be able to reproduce the problem. It would be different of this is some sort of a known problem, I think.

Your car downshifted several gears with no indication except the RPM change. I have no idea why, or what to do about it. But I sure am jealous. My DSG won't downshift without lurching and hesitating upon engagement. Really, though, I feel for you. It's irritating when these things don't behave themselves.....
Maybe we could get our cars together and breed them. The offspring might work perfectly?

Kickdown switch on the throttle pedal is getting engaged, somehow. This would shift from 7th gear to 4th at exactly the RPMs you described.
Not a common problem, and unlikely to be activated by your foot or floor mat acidentally, but I'd take it to the dealer anyway.
