S4 Model Years

I am currently looking to buy an Audi S4. I am unsure on what year to buy, I want to buy a B8 or B8.5 S4.
When was the first year Audi introduced the B8.5 model?
Also, any key differences between the 8 and 8.5 would be extremely valued. Thanks!

Nice write-up DrGP. Very helpful for someone ALSO looking for a well cared for B8 S4. Had a 2009 Avant for 8 years and loved every minute behind the wheel. Looking to get back into an Audi with these list of features.

Low mileage 20-40K miles
Monsoon or white (pie in the sky Nardo )
6-speed manual
Quattro® with Sport Differential
Black Optic package (not necessary if the car is white)
5 Arm Rotor (titanium) wheels
Black leather/alcantara interior
MMI Nav plus package
