Shift without brake

Shift without brake
Stupid question for wife's car.
Knowing that car washes are bad for the finish, I go through in the winter to keep it somewhat clean and not freeze. Problem, the s4 requires me to apply the brake to shift from neutral to drive, which stalls the carwash for the folks behind me (I've tried barely tapping) and sometimes it'll work ok. Just curious if this can be avoided? Not to mention trying to do a quick k turn, what's up with the delay before the engine actually engaged after shifting half the time?
Thanks for any help
