USB Input?

Guess there is a cable one needs to buy as noted above to plug USB in (replace the existing API cable in the glove box?).
Another odd thing, I noticed that when I plug my iPhone (older gen) into the existing cable, it seems to connect fine (charges), but when I hit the Media button, it shows that nothing is connected to the API?
Is there something I'm missing?
For some reason my car didn't come with a manual for the MMI/API interface, not sure if that's because the former owner lost it or if there just wasn't one.
