Default Excellent post!

For two reasons:

1) You are one of the (unfortunately) few people who understands the difference between affect and effect and doesn't funge out with the lame word "impact."

2) The final paragraph in the cited reference pretty much says it all -- with no FOD and with proper lubrication turbos are very hard to hurt. In fact another paragraph says they show 'bout no wear.

People are saying "face it, all turbos blow" well keep in mind that they CAN last for a VERY LONG time. And I'm not talking about 200,000 miles here. Truck turbos can go for a million miles. Sure they're bigger than ours, but the Audi ones seem more prone to issues -- hell Volvos and Saabs don't seem as prone to issues.

Default Interesting statement.....

<i>"Very few turbocharger failures would occur if no foreign material were permitted to enter either the turbine or compressor...."</i>

The article says very little about excessive boost causing turbo failure. But i'm guessing the experts on this forum would disagree.

Default Heck, seems like every other car on the road is a turbo'ed Mitsubishi Eclipse. And

I know that those guys don't always treat their cars that well. One DSM guy at the drag strip talked to me quite a bit...mentioned that his check engine light had been on for a year or two...but it still ran OK :-)

With turbos, as with life, it's better to be lucky than good.

Default Why 80,000? Why not 100,000, or 200,000? Your defense is an arbitrary number which means relaibilty?

I'd be willing to bet that 90% of us will not be the owners of our S4 past 80,000 miles!

Your defense is not factual data, research or documentation from a manufacturer, but your personal opinion that apparently if the turbos last past 80,000 miles on a chipped S4, it is considered reliable to you!

To eachhis own, but answering the original post by insinuating that chips with out a doubt shorten turbo life, without a it of substantiation, is just pure BS to me.

I am not trying to flame you system-S4000, as your posts are generally informed, imformative and interesting, but this one really hit me a bit.

take care,

Default No, what I'm saying is.....

that 23psi is within the operating range of the KKK model K03 turbo. This comes from actual research, not speculation.

All products that are pushed harder than average will WEAR OUT more quickly. Brakes, tires, bearings, pistons, rods, valves, synchros, gears, timing belts (chains), ect. But your stating that, in your original unedited post that if you chip your turbos, they are going to blow, is false as all hell!

Chipping the turbos makes them spin fater and force more air through the system. Yep, they are working harder. Yep, they will wear out faster. But saying that you will blow your turbos if you chip is just innacurate!

Under the same logic, driving your S4 at half throttle, never over 55mph, and never over 4,000 rpms will make even your stock engine last longer. But this is not the way 90% of us on this board drive, as we want the maximum performance out of our cars, we drive them harder and therefore will wear out all of the wear related driveline parts faster. A good majority of us are willing to take the risk of a chip, as we desire this performance.

Therefore, chipping is a value and risk judgment we should make on our won, with educated and accurate research. My point is, stating "if you chip your car, you WILL blow your turbos" does not fall into this category.

Default Mike, I think you hit the nail on the head .......

chipping gives you the *potential* to add more hp, therefore more stress. It's up to the driver to be aware of that and use it accordingly. Personally, I drive conservatively 99% of the time, but when I want that fun factor 1% of the time, it's there for me to enjoy. That driving style doesn't add *that* much more stress on the turbos, IMO.
