Default **Paging DAP** Why would Jason@STaSIS send a gallon of Redline 75W90 GL-5 with my rebuilt tranny?

GL-4 is whats called for because of the brass syncros. The container says: Synthetic 75w90 gear oil GL-5/GL-6...WTF?

So great, I have a whole gallon of differential fluid when it only calls for 2-3L. Aren't you running some M1 GL-5 that's supposedly ok/good to run with soft metals?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.....

Default No clue but the stock calls for a GL4/5 fluid. Redline MT-90 doesn't meet the specs nor does 75w90.

A good one to try is Motul Gear 300 which can be purchased at www.purems.com

Not on their website but Mike told me he had 5 bottles left last night.

Also Motul Motyl Gear 75w90 is an appropiate GL4/5 fluid with good specs as well. Also available at www.purems.com and it is on their website.

There are very few other GL4/5s available in the US besides the OE Castrol TAF-X which is $$$, royal purple MaxGear 75w90 which is too thick @ 40deg C and SF MTL-R.

Who knows, maybe the Stasis rebuild has diff syncros that aren't corroded by a GL-5 fluid. I'd give them a call and see what they say.

Default AFAIK synthetic GL-5 rated gears oils don't contain the corrosive additives that a non-synth would.

In order for it to be GL-5 rated I believe a non-synth gear oil needs a corrosive-to-brass additive (Phosphorous maybe?)

Default

sulfur and phosphorous are both commonly found in GL-4 and GL-5 fluids

Default many have used the Mt90 with no problems .. do you think that the motul would be

Correction . . . phos is commonly found in both . . . sulfur is the culprit.

Default The GL-5 gives EP protection (extreme pressure). Personally I'd prefer a gear oil with it

rather than one that is just thicker than most oils.

I'm currently running the SF MTL-R I mentioned, definite difference in cold shifting over OEM, great shift feel once warmed up but I'll have to wait 500 miles or so to make my opinion on it.

I decided not to choose the MT-90 based on reported cold shifting issues & the lack of GL-5 protection.

Default Its too early to formulate any opinions. They especially specify that it takes between 500-1k miles

for the EP/AW and FM packages to be fully heat activated.

I'll shoot you an email later today with some good links comparing the differences between GL4s & GL5s as well as the chemistry and composition of diff gear oils.

Gotta run.

Default A GL-4 oil is recommended for the trans because GL-5s typically have substances that are

corrosive to the brass rings found in transmissions. Perhaps the stuff that Stasis supplies isn't corrosive but is still rated as a GL-5? Don't have a definite answer for ya though.

I'd be sure to ask Stasis for some clarification though.
