2000 ABS pumps/modules...whats the deal?

Pump controller prone to fail. [more]
The hydraulic unit attached to the controller rarely fails. Unfortunately, dealer doesn't sell the controller separately, and it's a $1000+ part plus labor. I see quotes up to $1700 for replacement by the dealer.
Some places can repair the controller for around $300-400. Other people, like me, have replaced with salvaged controllers, which typically go for $150-$250. Original A part has been superceded by an E part.
It's not too hard to replace. Need to remove front driver's wheel and wheel liner. Unbolt and move windshield washer reservoir to provide clearance to remove the controller. Controller is held on by 6 torx bolts.
