2nd gear grind + plus loose shifter..
So my buddy just got a new trans in his S4. He got it from a Audi/VW shop, only has 40k mi on it. So heres the deal, his shifter is EXTREMELY loose(like play up and down), the dealer told him he needed a new one, and the shop said he may want to do something about it aswell. Now under normal driving it drives great, all gears are smooth, no problems(i drove it aswell). But under hard accel, it grinds going into 2nd gear, only if you shift extremely fast, if you slow get a good engagement, its fine. But if you go for a good hard shift, it grinds. He is extremely worrieds its snychros, but he thinks it may be because of the extremely loose shifter. Has anyone else had any problems like this? Is it possible it could be because of the loose shifter? Any ideas? Thanks for the help guys...

mine did that before...probably loose is causing it, but it could be the syncros. Have you
checked the motor mounts? btw, I install an ASP drivetrain stabilizer...did wonders. It no longer grinds going into second, and mine acted exactly the same as the one u are describing before i installed it. Also, try changing tranny fluid to motul gear 300?

Alignment is terribly important...
No question the synchro's could be shot..but try aligning the shifter first...
and doing the Zip tie mod will help a ton.

Mine's the same way, and has been since I've owned her. 2 dealers couldn't find a problem...
It's the biggest reason I hesitate to pour money into the car. If I can get the shifting smooth, then I'll start modding.
