Alpine is very good, several s4ers ...
have them in their cars - check in the audio forum a couple pages back - there are a couple of posts of the install.
As to where to get them - my advice is to be weary of online stores, many complaints - i would just try to find the closest alpine dealer to you and haggel with them.

The Alpine is the best of the lot. That doesn't make it great, but...
The mapping databases are far from mature. In five years, I think whatever we're using now will be embarrassingly obsolete. Of what's available today, tho, I do love my Alpine the best:
- One DVD for whole US and Canada
- More "points of interest" - I never have to look up a business by address, just by name
- Best UI I've seen
- Clearly intelligible voice
- You can control the mix between voice and music
- Intelligent data entry (automatically skips letters that won't exist in the database for the word you're entering)
- Yearly updates (waiting for the first one this December!)

I've got the Alpine...
Just had it installed into my S2000.....I went with the newer DVD ROm one. It ois very fast to respond (though I have Audi's stock one in the S4, and its pretty good too). Endless options (it breaks down restaurants by category..Mexican food, chinese, etc..), and is easy to use. Best part, is that you can get 1 disk for the whole country as an option! (I think it was only $70 or so more)

Magellen Nav750 GPS is very good. My unit includes the entire US Navtech database map.

For an installed system, the alpine looks cool. I have a handheld garmin,

Which isn't the best for US road navigation (although you can get the CD) But it is really accurate and gives plenty of data. It has good interface w/ PC also. Also, because its handheld, you can take it with you everywhere.
For strictly on-road navigation I would look at the Alpine. (expensive though!)
