Default OH man, I had the same exact problem. It took me months to figure it out.....

give me a call man (email me first) and I can walk you through what I did. I logged what procedure I went through, I just have to find it. It's easy once you figure it out. You have a VAG-COM diag. tool, right.

Default You're going to send me a check in the mail for this, right??? :)

I thought it was going to take me a while to find this. Looks like you
need to relearn your steering wheel angle sensor. Anyway, you might be
able to skip part of the procedure I put together if your ABS/ESP module
is still coded correctly (i.e.. not 00000).

Vehicle: 2001 Audi S4, 6-spd. manual, build 12/00, USA spec
Error Codes:
00778: Steering angle sensor (-G85)
not matched, intermitttent.

01044: Module incorrectly coded

Procedure I used:

0: Center steering wheel to approximately 0 degrees (not necessary)
1: Power mode: Run, engine not running (key on)
2: Open ABS controller (id = 03)
3: Login: mode 11
4: enter 09495 for example
5: Recode: mode 07
6: enter 04395 for example
7: Measuring Blocks: 08
8: Turn steering wheel + or - 10 degrees, hold 5 sec(prob. not necessary)
9: Return steering wheel to approximately zero degrees (+/- 5 deg.)
10: Login: mode 11
11: enter 40168
12: Basic settings: mode 04
13: Choose group 001
14: Wait a minute or so until beeps confirm process done and block 001 becomes unavailable
DONE!
15: Key off and back to run
16: Open ABS controller (id = 03) and read error codes (mode 02), steer. angle, etc.
