"In some 2001 cars, Audi either did not connect the CAN wires on the back of the radio, or if they did, they don't go anywhere. It's worth trying first. If you have orange CAN wires, you are probably OK. If they are grey, you will likely have to remove your cluster to run wires.

If you need pins for the cluster, they are part number 000 979 003. Removing the cluster is fairly easy, so don't be put off by the idea."

FWIW, I needed to put new pins into one of the connectors on back of the cluster.

It's easier just to pull the cluster, take off the connector and check if there's any pins on the cluster jack.
