OK, but my owner's manual specifies 0W-30, so why use 0W-40? What 0W-30 meets spec?
Why didn't anyone seem to realize this before? A year ago when I bought my S4, Mobil-1 0W30 was all the rage on this board so that's what I started using and have used since. Now, granted that makes me a fool for not checking the oil codes on the back of the bottle to be absolutely sure it met the manual's spec, but still it makes me wonder how so many people here could have used it without noticing that. Did Mobil-1's ratings for its 0W30 change when they altered the formulation recently? Maybe it met the spec before but not now?

Yeah, MobilOne 0w40...
...it meets the specs. 5w40 was the original recommendation in my 2000 S4's owner's manual. 0w oils weren't really on the market in summer 1999 when it was published, and I think they had the oil spec as good as they could at the time. Going to a 0w40 simply provides a theoretical benefit at startup, and given the history of the S4's turbos failing due to lubrication problems, doesn't surprise me about the move to recommending 0w30. The w30 oils are also energy conserving, and all car manufucturers are trying to get better fuel economy.

AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 meets ACEA A2 spec.
I believe someone said the ACEA spec is for Autobahn style high speed long term driving which most of don't do anyway.
