I'm sure the motor is good for many more miles...
but German cars being what they are, I'm concerned about all the other **** I might have to fix with a higher mileage car. At least with a 50K car, I hope to have some cushion before I have to dump money in to fix things.
I spotted a silver one on autotrader. 50K, new clutch, wheel bearings, brakes/rotors all around, and dealer service records, for $22+K. I'm not sure if I would be able to talk that number down at all. Based on what you're saying, it's not likely.
I really have a few goals in mind here:
1. Eliminate my loan.
2. Find something more reliable than the S in the long run.
3. Find something that will depreciate less than the S over the long haul.
4. Find something that handles well out of the box (I won't have a lot of disposable income/mod money after the coming year).
This seems like a good move on paper...if I can get the numbers to work out.

They are great cars, highly lauded and praised by tthe automotive press and enthusiasts
which keeps the resale value high. They are a bit overrated (in my opinion) and by now OLD looking (though some like the old school look alot)...and they aren't getting any younger - either looking nor mechanically...
i'd stick with the S. personally i'd rathar spend a couple more on a BRAND NEW EVO then 25K on a used E36 M3. and yes, the M3 looks better, but brand new cheaper interior vs. 5 year old (at least) barely upmarket interior, and warranty vs. none etc etc...i'd pick teh EVO in a heartbeat. (of course i know the same arguments can be made of evo vs. S, but i feel th differences are bigger in the case of teh E36 m3).

Hey, if you're getting an Evo and expecting the warranty to be like Audi,
you have a rude awakening in store.
Not that I've ever tried getting anything done under warranty. My car was stock for all of 3 hours.
