Anyone noticed this weird piece on their Borla exhaust? Looks like someone welded tincan?

Well, enough BS...
no need to continue this April's post further. Reefer Bob got it right: It was done on my request to help with so annoing 2000-3000RPM exhast drone. I just could not stand it on my Avant this winter. Yes, it did reduce drone significantly, how much it is hard to tell, as I changed DP too. If I would have to guess, say 50% quiter then before. Drone is almost gone now in warm weather. It did quite the exhaust down too, about 30% overall, but changed the tone of it at WOT. It does not sound that raspy / agressive as before, there is more shhhh sound there, still far away from sanblaster type noise, just not as mellow as before.
Would I recommend to someone, probaly not, unless you sick and tired of that drone like me or willing to experiment with different volume / angle of that kidney.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw it...
I know the Honda S2000 factory exhaust uses one of those. Basically the same effect as blowing across the top of a bottle, it creates a resonant frequency that can be tuned (through size and shape) to cancel certain other frequencies of sound. There should be almost no additional backpressure created from it as well. :-)
I'm surprised more aftermarket exhausts don't use them... they aren't that hard to make, even if you're just guessing what size you need at first.

^^^toolbox response... i dont know if you've heard borla exhaust....
they sound pretty damn good IMO. Most other tuners charge way too much for the same damn thing, bent tubing welded up to a usually generic off the shelf muffler anyhow.
But i guess all that R&D and pretty TIG welds really can justify the $500+ hikeup... or not.
"bling bling yO!"
*sigh*
