AUDI S4 RULES THE ICE!!! :-))
I took the S4 ice racing yesterday on Newfound Lake, New Hampshire.
First In Class (street studded tyres) and Fastest Time of the Day (AWD cars)!! Not bad for the first time ever out on the ice against competitors who have been there for years including an armada of well driven WRX's. Oh, and I even beat the time of the ICEMAN. :-)
Four runs in total. I managed to improve my lap time from approx 1:37 to 1:14. Then consistently around the 1:14's. Full results should be posted later on the BMWCCA web page.
I think credit goes to the S4 and my set-up of it. First, the S4 is a great starting point. Then I think I got the softer springs just right. I also think the softer setting on the dampers helped (though this still needs to be dialled in properly). I also think the softer A4 front anti-roll bar helped (though this can be improved on). Big credit goes to the LSD differential and the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4's which are just unbelievable! (I was getting down to times which were not far off some of the modified studded tyres.)
Big improvements can still be made. I had problems getting the car to rotate properly on the overrun/brakes in slower corners. I'm now 100% convinced that this can be improved upon with no front anti-roll bar and the basic A4 rear anti-roll bar. I have this now but still haven't received the bushings for it so couldn't test it out yesterday. I also need a more aggressive alignment (especially at the back). Finally, I need to take the time to dial in the dampers for the final set-up. Chances are that this won't happen until next year.
I was running my DL1 data logger during the runs but still haven't had a chance to look at the data. I will be very interested to see what sort of acceleration, braking and cornering loads I was getting. The ice was extremely slippery.
Needless to say, I had a fantastic time!
I have to recommend going out on the ice to anyone who really wants to work on and improve their driving.
Thanx go to STaSIS and all of the great (and really tuneable!) bits and pieces that they sell - including especially Ted & Jason, Ryan4 for all of the advice he gave, Audii-Dudii for forcing me to think about some of this stuff and all of you guys for creating this environment for the exchange of so much useful information. :-)

p.s. Pat, you are right about the ice. It is a very weird feeling when you are standing on the ice and someone drives close by and the ice cracks under your feet! :-/
