Can anyone diagnose my problem of VWTOOL not communicating with the car?

I used to have the same problem....
just go to device manager page, and go to com ports window, and in the comp1 communication port page there should be a "Device usage" at the bottom of the page, it should be in enabled mode, just change it to disable mode then restart your computer, after you restart your pc, go to the same page, and turn it back to enabled mode then it will require you to restart the pc again, after restarting the pc, it should work. I have to do this everytime when I wanna hook up the VAG with my desktop. Really don't know why I have to do this.

hmmmm
I think it does not need to have the engine running, just Accessory power.
In any case, try disconnecting the tool from the comm and then see com3 properties.
Set the buffers as high as you can go and also enable FIFO.
Don't know why com3 is not visible even when using VWtool on it. It still should show.
Just want to check if you have com3.

I do have the aftermarket stereo. Have had it for years....
Wouldn't the dreaded K wire (which I don't have the issue with since it is a 1995 VW) also fry their VAG 1551's?
If so, then I know it isn't a problem. No fuses (to my knowledge) are blown.
