Default Can someone enlighten me on why Germans can't produce small gaps between body panels?

I've noticed this on just about every single German car that the gaps between doors, headlamps and fenders, etc are huge compared to Honda, Nissan, Kia, etc.

I would think that in the quest to make the cars slice through the air with greater efficiency, they would reduce the amount of this gap. I know car companies are always touting this aspect.

Any insiders want to englighten me?

Default I thought Audi patented a process that let them make exceptionally small gaps?

FWIW, the gaps on my A4 are miniscule compared to those on my brother's 2000 Maxima.

Default I have, and have you seen the new Nissans? They are much tighter tolerences than the Jetta

In fact, I'd say that there is next to no gap between bumpers and headlamps on the Nissans and fender/door gaps.

Default Only a few cars around have tighter gaps than the Germans. G35 for one.

The G35 has nice, extreme tight tolerances. Looks good. I was
seriously considering one of those until I realized that the car
seems to have no place in the world. The execution is fine but
I really don't know what it is they executed, it seems somehow
anonymous and empty to me. I suppose can't quite describe it,
but it didn't seem like a car that would inspire me in any sort of
ongoing aesthetic or visceral fashion.
