Default Cheap beater for use in the city and for trips inside the bowels of S4 h*ll (Northern NJ)

In grad school right now (MBA in case anyone is wondering) I normally take classes at a satellite college campus near my house. (very good area)

Looks like in the winter term I am going to need to take a few mba concentration classes on the main campus. Problem is the main campus is in North Philly. (Olney section for those of you who're familiar) Which to me means, no S4, between the potholes headlight theives etc, dont feel like dealing with it. Granted its not as rampant as it is in Northern NJ, I still dont feel like being a victim of theivery. Was thinking of spending no more then $2500 bucks. Since it will be used in the winter was thinking something thats okay in the snow. Granted most small snow storms will shut the night classes down pretty quick since everyone is driving anyway. Also be nice to have something when I have to drive up to Rahway and more questionable places in NJ.

Short list now are-
Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro (back to my roots)
4000 quattro
100 or 200 quattro
-----------
Maybe a diesel benz?
Porsche 944 924 etc

Open to any other suggestions.....sports cars, dune buggies, sedans whatever.

Honda, Nissan, or Toyota. You're looking at money pits there.

Default The old Audi's are better? I can't imagine that they're any more fun to drive than an Accord is

anyway. They're just more expensive appliances. The 944 is a fun car, but not something you want to rely on in the winter.

Default I'm sort of biased...but if you can find an 85-87 4kq *with service records*...

it would be a great winter car. If you find one for sale and the seller has kept records of recent and prior repairs, I think it indicates that the seller cared about the car. I would never buy one from someone who had no clue what they did to it though...that's when you could have a money pit on your hands.

That being said, mine is still strong after almost 20 years. With regular maintenance, they are great cars...especially in the snow.

Default Agree with everyone else...Japanese.

Last thing you want to do is get a great deal on a beater, only to have to dump money into it to keep it running.
