Default considering purchase of S4

I currently have a 2002 BMW 330Ci and I must say that the car has been a treat. I am considering the S4 because I want more performance and four doors and like the idea of AWD. Cars I have been considering are the S4, or a CPO 540/6 or M5. Thoughts (esp from those who have driven all)? Thanks.

Default My $.02

The S4 is the way to go if you live in the snowbelt. If you do not need AWD, I would stick with your BMW choices.

I have an S4 and owned a 99 M3, and driven both of the BMW's you mentioned.

M5 is the clear winner.

Default Just to expand a bit.

The S4 needs suspension modifications to get it to handle as well as the BMWs. If you plan on tracking the car, the brakes should be upgraded as well.

My M3 was great at the track and needed nothing in stock form.

The M5 has great linear power delivery. It does not have the rush that a turbo gives you, but it is deceptively fast.

The 540/6 is on the same performance level of the S4 but is a larger car and feels that way. Handling and performance are still great.

The S4 has the best interior of all three. It will give you the most gains from modifcations and is a real sleeper. Reliability can be questionable once you start modding. If you blow the turbos, and you are modified expect a hassle from the dealer and a potential $6k bill. Even so, for me, the AWD here in the snowbelt more than makes up for these shortcomings.

If I lived in a warm climate, there would be an M5 in my driveway

Default with couple changes (to bring the s4 to M5 $ value..)

the s4 will school the M5 on the street or track.. and you know it.

Maybe, but it's stupid to compare modified cars to stock cars.

Amazed at the quality? You mean lack thereof?
